A look at the proposed lodges

CARLISLE CITY Council has received a bid to locate holiday lodges and glamping pods on farm land in Brampton.

An application has been submitted to the council to locate four holiday lodges, two glamping pods and newt ponds on land north of Tarn Lodge Farm.

The application, which officers have recommended for refusal, is being considered at the council’s development control committee on April 8.

Owners of the land near Castle Carrock intend to place the lodges and pods around the northern banks and slopes of the tarn.

In a report on the proposal prepared for councillors, case officers outlined eleven issues.

Case officers’ issues with the development include that there is “no identified need for the development”, it is not on a recognised walking/cycling route and it provides “no meaningful support to the rural economy.”

The impact on traffic and biodiversity has also been queried.

Cumbria County Council as Highways and Lead Flood Authority has objected to the application.

In supporting statements, the agent, Hyde Harrington said: “The tarn is already a site where leisure and recreational activities have historically taken place and continue to do so.

“This application also relates to a site where planning permission has previously been granted for six lodges.

“When carrying out the balancing exercise, and even if the tarn is considered to be within the curtilage of Tarn Lodge/Folly Tower, it is evident that there will be no direct or physical impact whatsoever on the historic fabric of the designated heritage assets.”
