Bison Trace Luxury Camping Seeks To Redefine Glamping…
Matt and Leigh Wells are launching the Bison Trace Luxury Camping in French Creek.
Leigh Wells said her and her husband decided to launch Bison Trace Luxury Camping because of the increasing popularity of “glamping.” Prior to their purchase of the property, the campground operated as French Creek R&R Campgrounds.
The campground is going to feature six Lancaster cabins, complete with kitchens, bathrooms, a queen bed, bunk beds, a screened in porch and a seating area on the porch. Four of the cabins have been installed, with two more expected to be completed after the campground launches. One of the cabins will be ADA compliant with an ADA compliant bathroom.
The campground will also feature Conestoga covered wagons, furnished with two twin beds and a queen bed, a full bathroom and heating and air conditioning.
Safari tents will also be available, providing guests with queen beds, a bunk bed, a full bed, a dining room table, a front porch with furniture and a small kitchen area.
Although the safari tents do not have bathrooms, the campground has a newly remodeled bathhouse. Guests will not be required to share the bathhouse, because each tent site will have their own designated bathroom.
Each camp site will have its own fire pit with firewood provided, Adirondack chairs and a deluxe smoker grill. Wells said the campground will provide each person with a lantern, pots and pans, linens and towels.
“Basically people just need to bring what they’re going to eat and drink and wear,” she said.
We just want to make it luxurious camping in a really beautiful setting.”
The campground consists of 27 acres and will provide campers with hiking access through the woods. A recreational building complete with darts, corn hole, shuffleboard and board games will provide additional entertainment for guests. The campground will also feature a pavilion with a brick fireplace for campers to enjoy.
The campground also has direct access to French Creek.
“The the creek is just beautiful,” Wells said. “There will be an area where people can hang out by the creek, and there will be kayaking.”
The campground owners also plan on installing a dog park next spring. With dog dishes and other pet-friendly amenities provided by the campground, Wells hopes the campground will be able to accommodate visitor’s pets.
Wells said the campground’s proximity to Peek’n Peak and Findley Lake makes it an ideal location for people to camp.
To celebrate the launch of the new campground, Matt and Leigh Wells recently hosted an open house event, giving visitors the opportunity to experience what the new campground has to offer.
“We’re just really excited,” Wells said.
While Wells said the safari tents and covered wagons will most likely not be used during the winter months, she said the cabins will be available to rent starting after the open house.
Wells said the project has been challenging to complete because both her and her husband live in Kentucky.
“It’s a lot to do, and trying to do it from so far away has been tough, but it’s really nice to see the finished product,” she said. “I’m really excited about it. I think it’s going to be really cool. We’ve been working on this for a little over a year now, and I guess now it’s time to start renting.”
Wells and her husband own two cottages near Findley Lake, through which they discovered their passion for providing quality rental housing.
“We really enjoyed renting our places and meeting people and just catering to people,” Wells said. “It’s just fun to make people feel good. I just love it. We really try to go out of our way to make our places really special for our guests.”
As the campground increases in popularity, the owners plan on hosting events, such as pizza nights and wine tastings. Wells also hopes to partner with Peek’n Peak for swimming, golf and skiing.
Wells said the goal of Bison Trace Luxury Camping is to provide a place where visitors want to come back each time.
“I want our guests to just feel like they can’t wait to get back there,” she said.
While Matt and Leigh Wells hope to expand the campground in the future, Leigh Wells said the goal is to keep it “quaint.”
“We’re going to have six cabins, two covered wagons, and four tents,” she said. “We really don’t want to do a whole lot more than that.”
